Curried Potatoes (Pani Wala Aloo)

​Weightloss regime allows appropriate amounts of potatoes if cooked right. This recipe has little fat and is cooked mostly in water.

It takes very little time to cook and minimal effort.

Eat with a healthy, yummy roti and enjoy!


  • ​​Small or medium sized potatoes - 1 lbs (500 g)
  • ​​Yellow or white onion finely chopped - 1/2 cups
  • ​​Asafoetida - 1 pinch (optional)
  • ​​Cumin - 1 tps
  • ​Whole dried red pepper - 3 (can use green chili, use 1 or 2 per taste)
  • ​Turmeric - 1/2 tsp
  • ​​Water - 1 cup or 250 ml
  • ​Salt - to taste
  • ​​Olive oil - 2 tbsp
  • ​Cilantro - 1/4 cup to garnish

    ​Wash and slightly peel the potatoes and slice them in medium thickness.

    ​Heat a deep pan over medium high heat. Add olive oil.

    ​When the oil is warmed up, add asafoetida, cumin, and whole red pepper. You will hear the sizzle.

    ​Add onions and fry till they are lightly brown/pink in color.

    ​Add turmeric and salt and mix well.

    ​Now add the potatoes and water.

    ​Cook covered on high for about 10 minutes or until potatoes are cooked.

    ​Turn the heat off and garnish with cilantro.

​Serve with low carb flatbread, roti or tortillas!!
