What is Groundhog day? Have you watched the iconic Groundhog day movie? I watch it every Groundhog day pretty much!
Feb 2 is the groundhog day in USA.
And If you have not seen the 1993 classic, starring Bill Murray and directed by Harold Ramis (of Ghostbusters), Add this to the “Must watch every year list”. Groundhog day is one of the best movies ever made. Bill Murray plays Phil Connors in the movie. Phil is a weatherman on TV who keeps re-living the same bad day again, and again until he transforms himself to come out of the Groundhog Day Timewarp. This is one of those movies, I continue to watch again, and again, and again, and again.
The big question is Are you making the best of your life or living the same day over and over again and again? What is something new you did today?
This movie gives you good laughs. And over the reruns, you may actually develop a theory about the movie. I might share mine another day. I want this post to be without the spoilers. Enjoy some of the quotes from the movie today (without context).
Phil : I’m a God.
Rita: You are God?
Phil : I’m a God, I’m not The God. I don’t think.
Rita : What did you do today?
Phil : Oh, same-old same-old.
Phil : What would you do if you were stuck in one place and every day was exactly the same, and nothing that you did mattered?
Ralph : That about sums it up for me.
Phil : It’s the same thing your whole life: “Clean up your room. Stand up straight. Pick up your feet. Take it like a man. Be nice to your sister. Don’t mix beer and wine, ever.” Oh yeah: “Don’t drive on the railroad track.”
Gus : Well, Phil, that’s one I happen to agree with.
Phil : Do you know what today is?
Rita : No, what?
Phil : Today is tomorrow. It happened.
Ok, So What is Groundhog day?
My second year in America, back in 2005 someone at work wished me – Happy Groundhog day. And the talker that I am, I responded with a series of Questions – Is there a day for the rodent? Are they extinct in America? Are you all trying to raise awareness to keep them alive? Eweee I really don’t care! Rats!!
To my utter bewilderment, I come to find out that Americans actually rely on a famous Groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil (and various others all around the country) to determine if this winter is going to stay, or if there is going to be an early Spring. They asked me to go home and check on TV, weather, news, and entertainment channel, and then a colleague says – Don’t forget to watch the movie called Groundhog Day.
Not going to spoil the movie for anyone that is yet to watch it. I know at some point today or tomorrow I am going to catch a rerun!
I could use the dialogues from this movie as my entire means of communication. I cannot promise this is the last one. But definitely one of my favorites, right up there with – “I am a God, I am not The God” one.
Phil : To the groundhog.
Rita : I always drink to world peace.
Anyone else reading this feels like their life is stuck in Groundhog Day? You wake up every weekday morning and it’s just the same day repeating over and over. You go to work. Spouse goes to work. Kids go to school. Same Routine.
Today is tomorrow. It happened.
